What Is The Purpose of Public Schools?

The goal/purpose of public schools is to give everyone equal opportunity to learn and be able to achieve their full potential and be able to participate in future society. Public schools educate everyone no matter race, gender, or ethnicity. They have all social classes, it does not matter if you are rich or poor, you will be receiving the same education. Marginalized students are those individuals or social groups who, by virtue of their race, gender, or geographical location, have historically been placed on the margins or periphery of the mainstream social and economic hierarchy.  In public schools, I feel like marginalized students are more accepted because everyone is put together in one classroom no matter who they are or where they come from. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of someone else. Empathy is a big thing that everyone should have/use especially when it comes to the typically marginalized students.

Yes, there are perks to private schools but not everyone is able to afford private education, that's why public school, in my opinion, is amazing because it is open to everyone. Public schools have played a very major role in the development of most people. Schools have been educating students for almost 200 years. Not only have public schools been educating but they have been feeding students and making sure they are clothed and okay mentally. During COVID-19 public schools worked hard and fast to get the necessary technology out to the students and make sure they all had access to online resources. Public schools, I feel, go above and beyond to take care of their students and make sure everyone has a fair and good education.

In the video tagged below, they discuss empathy and why it is important, and how to avoid being the person who always says "well at least". Which is very important for teachers and students to remember and learn while being in public schools and interacting with other teachers and students. I just love the way this video discusses empathy.

  1. Hello Abbey!
Public school is a great thing for many students and families. It gives children an opportunity for growth and learning in their academic abilities. I wanted to discuss one of your sentences, "everyone is put together in one classroom no matter who they are or where they come from." I agree that this is one of the many bonuses of public schools. No matter what, all students are given the right to an education and are placed in a classroom.

    1. Hi Lindzie. Thank you so much for reading and responding to my blog post! I do think it is so important for every child to have the same access to education no matter what. Thats why I think public schools are so great. It also really does expose children to many different walks of life.

  2. I love how you connected the both themes we learned about in the modules, empathy and public schools, in such an eloquent way. You mention how in public schools "marginalized students are more accepted" and how they're "open to everyone," which I do think is true in many cases. For instance, I went to a pretty diverse high school; we were about one third Hispanic, one third Black, one third White, and had upper, middle, and lower class. However, I know this is not the case for everyone. In many areas there's a higher performing school and an under-performing school and which school you are zoned to depends on where you live, but those trying to live near the "good school" drive up the prices and then lower income families and children are therefore not given the same educational opportunities as the wealthier kids (this is also rooted in racism). This is an issue with public schools that I definitely think deserves more awareness. This article goes more in depth

    1. Hi Alissa. I think empathy is so important for teachers to have so it was a easy connection!! I think its amazing how diverse your school was because it really does force you to accept everyone and be exposed to so many different people and lifestyles. Its so hard when "good schools" are next to "bad schools" because is becomes unfair to the students. Education should not be limited/restricted because of wealth or ethnicity. Thank you for reading my blog and commenting. Also thank you for the article it was very insightful!

  3. Hey Abbey! You did such a great job at explaining the benefits of public school. Personally, I went to private school so I don’t have the same experience as you do but I think that adds to the different perspectives and opinions. I love that public schools are open and welcoming to everyone and it’s great that education is available to everyone in the United States. Public and private schools are very different but so important. Private school allows for more of a one on one time with the teachers to make it a more personable educational experience. I also like your thoughts on empathy. Empathy is important in all areas of life, especially school. Teachers have to have empathy towards their students because they have no idea what is going on in other parts of their kid’s lives. I think it is so great that we are learning about how to have empathy towards other as future teachers.

    1. Hi Hannah. I love your point of view on private schools. It is a very good point that you get more one-on-one time which is super important. Everyone will have different experiences, especially depending on what kind of schools you attend. It's great that everyone has options when it comes to schools. I also agree that teachers having a lot of empathy is so so important. You will never fully understand what is going on at home or what is going on in that kid's mind. Thank you so much for reading my blog and responding!
